Melissa Proudlock grew up in Port Colborne, Ontario and currently resides in Niagara Falls, Ontario. She graduated from Niagara College in Fine Art & Design Fundamental – Graphic Design Production, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Interactive Multimedia. Since 2006 she has worked full-time as a graphic designer for a local winery.
When creating a wine label of a cello made out of vines, the idea of using wine as paint was born. Melissa created her first wine painting in the Fall of 2013. Through trial and error she has perfected her skill and discovered a variety of colours that wine provides. The process of preparing the wine was also perfected. Such as; letting the wine age, reducing it, and adding lees (sediment found at the bottom of wine tanks). The wine needs to be the right consistency before she can even begin to create her artwork.
She paints everything from portraits, animals, landscapes, musicians to fan & horror art and welcomes commissions. Her artwork has been showcased around the Niagara Region and she has been recognized around the world. One of her latest paintings was showcased on the George Takei Presents Facebook Page where the video has received over 1 million views. CBC Arts Exhibitionist has also featured her work on their Halloween and Holiday Episodes along with a few more coming out in 2019.
She takes great care in preserving her wine paintings. Many layers of archival spray along with layers of museum quality varnish helps save the colours of the wine. Each painting is professionally scanned which allows her to reproduce her work as Fine Art Giclee’s, photo prints, stretched canvases and greeting cards. These are available for purchase, along with her originals, through her website at: www.paintedwithwine.com or at various stores throughout the Niagara Region.
